Canvas vs Blackboard: A Student's Comparison for 2026

How Canvas and Blackboard compare for students, from navigation and quizzes to mobile apps and what teachers can see, plus how to study well on either one.

If your school is switching platforms, or you take courses at two institutions, you may use both Canvas and Blackboard. Here is how they compare from a student's perspective.

  • Canvas: a consistent left-hand course menu (Home, Modules, Assignments, Quizzes, Grades) and a global navigation bar. Courses look similar across schools.
  • Blackboard: Blackboard Learn Ultra has a cleaner, more modern layout than older Blackboard versions, but courses can vary depending on which version your school uses.

Quizzes and tests

  • Canvas: two engines, Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. See Canvas Classic vs New Quizzes.
  • Blackboard: Tests with question pools, timers, auto-submit and many question types.

Both support time limits, multiple attempts, question pools, randomisation and results settings.

What teachers can see

Both platforms track activity: logins, page views, submissions and quiz attempts. Canvas Classic Quizzes have a detailed quiz log. Blackboard offers activity and test access logs. See what Canvas teachers can see.

Lockdown and proctoring

Both work with Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor, as well as other proctoring services. See Respondus LockDown Browser for Canvas.

Mobile apps

Both have student apps for notifications, content and some assessments. Locked exams usually need a computer.

Studying on either platform

Your study method does not need to change:

  • Plan with the calendar and to-do list.
  • Use practice quizzes as retrieval practice.
  • Review every graded quiz.
  • Use AI to explain concepts and create practice questions.

Browser-based tools work on both. TrustStudy reads the page you are on, so it can check practice questions on Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Google Forms alike. On pages that load inside embedded frames, like Canvas New Quizzes, Screenshot mode is the most reliable.
