Moodle vs Canvas vs Blackboard: A Student's Comparison

How Moodle, Canvas and Blackboard compare for students, from quizzes and mobile apps to what teachers can see, and how to study effectively on each one.

If you have studied at more than one school, or take courses across departments, you may have used Moodle, Canvas and Blackboard. They do the same job but feel very different. Here is how they compare from a student's point of view.

Quick overview

  • Moodle: open source and extremely customisable. Each school's Moodle can look and behave quite differently.
  • Canvas: a cloud platform with a clean, consistent interface across schools.
  • Blackboard (now often Blackboard Learn Ultra): widely used by universities, with an interface that changed a lot in recent years.

Quizzes

Moodle

Many question types (including drag and drop, matching, calculated and embedded answers), flexible review options, multiple attempts with different grading methods, and optional Safe Exam Browser. See Moodle quiz security features.

Canvas

Two quiz engines: Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. Classic Quizzes have a student-visible quiz log for teachers, New Quizzes have more question types. Often paired with Respondus LockDown Browser. See Canvas Classic vs New Quizzes.

Blackboard

Tests with question pools, timers, auto-submit and Respondus integration. Settings depend on the version your school runs.

What teachers can see

All three platforms log your activity: logins, page views, submissions and quiz attempts with timestamps. The detail varies. Canvas Classic Quizzes include a quiz log that can note when a student leaves the quiz page. Moodle keeps detailed course logs and response histories. Blackboard offers activity reports. Read what Canvas teachers can see and can Moodle see other tabs?.

Mobile apps

All three have official apps for notifications, reading content and some quizzes. Locked-down exams usually require a computer.

Studying on each platform

The good news: your study method does not need to change. On any LMS:

  • Use the calendar or to-do list to plan.
  • Treat practice quizzes as retrieval practice.
  • Review every graded quiz carefully.
  • Use AI to explain concepts and generate practice questions.

An extension like TrustStudy works the same way on Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard and other web pages, because it reads the page you are on. One note: some Canvas New Quizzes load inside an embedded frame, where Screenshot mode is the most reliable way for TrustStudy to read the question.

Which is "best"?

For students, the best LMS is the one your school configured well. A well-organised Moodle course beats a messy Canvas course every time, and the other way around.

Frequently asked questions

Which LMS is the easiest to use for students?

Canvas is often described as the most modern and intuitive, Moodle as the most flexible and Blackboard as the most varied between schools. Your experience depends heavily on how your school sets it up.

Do Moodle, Canvas and Blackboard track student activity?

Yes. All three keep logs of logins, page views and quiz attempts, and all three can show teachers activity reports.

Can I use the same study methods on every LMS?

Yes. Retrieval practice, spacing and reviewing mistakes work the same everywhere. Only the quiz settings and interface change.
