What Can Teachers See on Canvas? Activity, Page Views and Quizzes

Canvas shows teachers more than grades. Here is what they can see about your activity, page views, last access, quizzes and submissions, and what they cannot see.

Canvas gives teachers a surprising amount of information. Knowing what they can see helps you understand your course, avoid misunderstandings and stay on the right side of the rules.

Course activity

From the People page, teachers can see each student's:

  • Last activity: when you last accessed the course.
  • Total activity: the time Canvas counted you as active in the course.

Access reports

The Access Report lists course resources you viewed or participated in, how many times, and when you last accessed them. Teachers can see whether you opened the reading, watched the module page or never visited a file.

Analytics

Canvas analytics show participation, page views, on-time submissions and grades across the course and per student. Teachers often use these to check who needs support.

Submissions

For assignments, teachers see when you submitted, every resubmission, and whether it was late. Turnitin reports appear here if your school uses it.

Quizzes

  • Classic Quizzes: a detailed quiz log per attempt, including when you started, answered questions, stopped viewing the quiz page and resumed. See Canvas quiz logs explained.
  • New Quizzes: session records and moderation tools.
  • Statistics: how the class answered each question.

What teachers cannot see

  • Your other tabs, websites or apps.
  • Your screen or webcam, unless a proctoring tool is used.
  • Your private messages outside the course.
  • Your browser extensions.

Proctoring and lockdown tools

With Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor, or other proctoring services, teachers may also see webcam recordings and flagged events. See proctored exams on Canvas.

What this means for you

Use the visibility to your advantage

Teachers notice engaged students. Open materials, post in discussions, submit on time and ask questions. For studying, use practice quizzes and AI-generated questions before graded work; TrustStudy helps you check practice questions on the page. See how to study for Canvas quizzes with AI.

Study with TrustStudy

Try the question yourself, then highlight it and press Alt + X to check your answer right on the page. No tabs, no copy-paste. Start with 20 free credits.
