5 Moodle Features Teachers Use to Spot Cheating
Moodle gives teachers more visibility than most students realise. Here are five built-in features, from logs to response history, and why honesty is simpler.
Many students assume Moodle only shows teachers a final grade. In reality, Moodle records a lot about every attempt. This article explains five built-in features, not to scare you, but so you understand why trying to cheat is a bad bet.
1. Attempt timing
For every quiz attempt, teachers see when it started, when it was submitted and how long it took. They can sort the whole class by time taken. A 40-question quiz finished in four minutes with a perfect score stands out immediately, as does an attempt that started at the same second as another student's.
2. Response history
Moodle records the history of each question in an attempt: when an answer was saved, changed or submitted, with timestamps. Teachers can open any attempt and see this step by step. Patterns like every answer being changed at the end, or long gaps followed by bursts of correct answers, are visible.
3. Course logs
Moodle's logs record events across the course: which pages and resources you opened, when, and from which IP address. Teachers can filter by student, activity and date. Logs show, for example, whether a student opened course files during a closed-book quiz, or whether two accounts were used from the same location at the same time.
4. Quiz reports and statistics
The quiz results report and statistics show how the whole class answered each question. Teachers can spot unusual patterns, like a group of students who all chose the same uncommon wrong answer, or a question that suddenly became much easier for some students.
5. Plagiarism and AI detection plugins
Many schools connect Moodle assignments to services like Turnitin, which compare submissions against other students' work, the web and published sources, and often flag possible AI-generated writing. See can Moodle detect AI? for how reliable these flags are.
Beyond Moodle
Teachers also use Safe Exam Browser, proctoring tools, random questions from large banks and simple conversations. A short "can you walk me through question 5?" is often the most effective check of all.

What to do instead
If you are tempted to cheat, it usually means you are short on time or stuck on the material. Both have better solutions:
- Ask your teacher for help or an extension.
- Use AI to study the topic and practise beforehand. Our Moodle quiz prep guide shows how.
- Use tools like TrustStudy on practice quizzes to get fast feedback, so the real quiz feels familiar.
