Canvas Quiz Not Loading or Submitting? 10 Fixes
Canvas quiz stuck loading, not submitting or showing an error? Ten practical fixes for browsers, connections, LockDown Browser and what to do if time is running out.
A Canvas quiz that will not load or submit is stressful, especially with a timer running. Here are ten fixes, from most to least likely to help.
1. Check availability
If the quiz is not yet available or already closed, it will not open. Check the "Available from" and "Until" dates on the quiz page.
2. Check requirements
The quiz may need an access code from your teacher, a specific network (IP filter), or Respondus LockDown Browser. Read the message on the quiz page. See LockDown Browser for Canvas.
3. Use a supported browser
Use an up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari. Very old browsers may not load quizzes correctly.
4. Disable extensions or use a private window
Some extensions, such as ad blockers or script blockers, can interfere with Canvas. Try a private window, where most extensions are off, or temporarily disable them.
5. Allow third-party content for New Quizzes
New Quizzes runs inside an embedded frame. Strict privacy settings that block third-party cookies can stop it from loading. If New Quizzes shows a blank area, allow cookies for your Canvas domain or try another browser.
6. Clear cache and cookies
A corrupted cache can cause loading loops. Clear your browser's cache for the Canvas site, then log in again.
7. Check your connection
Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired connection or a phone hotspot. Unstable connections cause failed saves and submissions.
8. Do not open the quiz in several tabs
Having the same quiz open twice can cause conflicts and odd log entries. Use one tab only.
9. Try the Canvas Student app
If your browser fails and the quiz does not require LockDown Browser, the Canvas Student app may work as a backup. Check with your teacher first.
10. Document and contact your teacher
If nothing works, take screenshots or phone photos of the error with the time visible, and email your teacher through Canvas Inbox or school email straight away. Clear evidence makes it easy for them to reopen the quiz or give extra time.
Prevent problems next time
- Start quizzes early, not at the deadline.
- Test your setup on a practice quiz.
- Keep your laptop charged and plugged in.
Be honest about problems
