Canvas Quiz Logs Explained: What Teachers See in Your Attempt

Canvas quiz logs record when you start, answer, leave and return to a quiz. Here is what each entry means, how teachers read them and how to avoid misunderstandings.

If you have heard that Canvas "knows everything you do" during a quiz, you have probably heard about the quiz log. Here is what it really contains and how teachers use it.

Where the log lives

In Classic Quizzes, a teacher can open any student's submission and click View Log. The log shows a timeline of the attempt.

What the log records

Typical entries include:

  • Session started: when you began the attempt.
  • Answered question: with the question number and the time.
  • Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page: the quiz page lost focus, for example because you switched tabs or windows.
  • Resumed: you came back to the page.
  • Flagged question and other interactions.

There is also an option to view the answers at each point in time, so teachers can see how your responses changed during the attempt.

What the log does not record

  • Which websites or apps you used.
  • What was on your screen.
  • Your webcam or microphone (that requires a separate proctoring tool).

How teachers interpret logs

Most teachers know that logs contain noise: notifications, accidental clicks, screen savers and slow connections all create entries. They tend to look for patterns rather than single events, and they often talk with the student before deciding anything.

New Quizzes

New Quizzes stores its own session records in the moderation area. They are presented differently but also give teachers a view of your activity during the attempt. See Canvas Classic vs New Quizzes.

Avoiding misunderstandings

  • Close other apps and turn off notifications before a quiz.
  • Plug in your laptop so it does not sleep.
  • If something interrupts you, tell your teacher right away with the time.
  • Stay on the quiz page for the whole attempt unless the quiz allows resources.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Canvas quiz log?

It is a record of events during a Classic Quiz attempt, such as starting the quiz, answering questions, leaving the page and returning. Teachers open it from the student's quiz submission.

Can a quiz log prove a student cheated?

Not on its own. It shows events, not intentions. Teachers usually combine it with timing, answers and a conversation before drawing conclusions.

Can students see their own quiz log?

No. Quiz logs are visible to teachers and other course staff, not to students.
