How the Canvas Quiz Timer Works (and What Happens at Zero)

Does the Canvas quiz timer stop if you close the tab? What happens when it runs out? How availability dates cut your time short. Everything students need to know.

Timed quizzes on Canvas follow a few simple rules, but students still lose time and marks by misunderstanding them. Here is exactly how the timer works.

The timer runs on the server

When you click Take the Quiz on a timed quiz, Canvas records the start time. The countdown is calculated by Canvas, not your computer. That means:

  • Closing the tab does not pause it.
  • Losing your connection does not pause it.
  • Restarting your laptop does not pause it.

When you return, the timer shows the true remaining time.

Time limit vs availability dates

Quizzes have a time limit and an availability window (available from, until). If the window closes before your time limit ends, Canvas uses the window. For example, a 60-minute quiz available until 11:59 pm only gives you 30 minutes if you start at 11:29 pm.

What happens at zero

When time runs out, Canvas submits automatically with the answers saved so far. In Classic Quizzes, answers are saved as you work. In New Quizzes, answers are saved as you go as well. Long typed answers that were not saved yet may be lost if your connection drops at the last moment.

Timer display

The timer appears on the quiz page. In Classic Quizzes you can hide it with a "Hide Time" option if it makes you anxious, though it keeps running. Warnings may appear as time runs low.

Extra time

Teachers can grant extra time to individual students:

  • Classic Quizzes: through Moderate This Quiz.
  • New Quizzes: through the Moderate tab.

If you have approved accommodations, check that your extra time is visible before starting.

Pacing yourself

Divide the time by the number of questions and keep a buffer for review. If questions are shown one at a time and locked after answering, you cannot go back, so decide carefully before moving on. See Canvas quiz time management.

Do not try to beat the clock

Frequently asked questions

Does the Canvas quiz timer keep running if I close the browser?

Yes. Once you start a timed quiz, the timer runs on Canvas's servers and keeps counting whether or not the page is open.

What happens when the Canvas quiz timer runs out?

Canvas submits your attempt automatically with the answers saved so far.

Why did I get less time than the time limit?

If the quiz's availability ends before your time limit is up, Canvas stops at the availability end time. Starting late can cut your time short.
