Canvas New Quizzes: A Complete Student Guide
Everything students need to know about Canvas New Quizzes, from new question types and stimulus passages to timers, accommodations and viewing results.
New Quizzes is becoming the default quiz tool in many Canvas courses. It looks cleaner than Classic Quizzes and supports more kinds of questions. Here is what you need to know to take one confidently.
How New Quizzes looks
New Quizzes opens within your Canvas course but is a separate tool, loaded in an embedded frame. The layout is clean, with a question list or navigation, a timer if there is one, and a submit button at the end.
New question types
You may see formats that Classic Quizzes did not offer:
- Ordering: drag items into the correct sequence.
- Categorisation: sort items into categories.
- Hot spot: click the correct area on an image.
- Matching: pair items from two lists.
- Stimulus: a passage, image or data set followed by several questions.
- Formula and numeric: calculations with tolerances.
- Fill in the blank with dropdowns, word banks or typed answers.
See Canvas question types explained for strategies.
Timer and submission
If the quiz is timed, the timer appears on screen. Answers are saved as you go, and the attempt is submitted automatically when time runs out. See the Canvas quiz timer explained.
Attempts
Teachers set the number of attempts and how the score is kept: highest, latest or average. Some add a waiting period between attempts. See Canvas quizzes with multiple attempts.
Accommodations
Through the Moderate tab, teachers can give individual students extra time, extra attempts or other adjustments. If you have approved accommodations, check before starting that they appear on your quiz.
Viewing results
Teachers choose what you see after submitting: your answers, whether they were correct, the correct answers, points and feedback, and when. Results may appear immediately, later, or partially. See how to see Canvas quiz answers.
Studying for New Quizzes
Because question types are more varied, practise them:
- Ask an AI to generate ordering, categorisation and matching exercises from your notes.
- Use your teacher's practice quizzes if available.
- Check answers after trying. With TrustStudy, use Screenshot mode on New Quizzes pages, since the quiz runs inside a frame that text modes may not read.
