Proctored Exams on Canvas: What to Expect and How to Prepare
What happens in a proctored Canvas exam? Webcam checks, room scans, flags and reviews explained, plus a preparation checklist so exam day goes smoothly.
Proctored exams on Canvas are increasingly common, especially for finals. If it is your first time, the setup can feel stressful. Knowing what to expect makes it routine.
How proctoring connects to Canvas
Canvas does not include webcam proctoring itself. Schools add tools such as:
- Respondus Monitor, used with LockDown Browser.
- Other proctoring services that integrate with Canvas quizzes, using automated recording, live proctors or both.
What may be recorded
Depending on the tool and settings:
- Webcam video and photos.
- Microphone audio.
- Screen activity.
- Identity checks with a student ID.
- A room scan before starting.
Software flags events like a second person, no face visible, voices, or leaving the exam. A teacher or reviewer then looks at the flagged moments.
Before exam day
- Install required software and run any system check.
- Do a practice quiz with the same setup if available.
- Check your webcam, microphone and lighting.
- Prepare a quiet room with a clear desk.
- Keep your student ID ready.
Exam day
- Start 15 minutes early to complete the check-in.
- Keep your face visible and stay in the room.
- Have only allowed materials on your desk.
- If someone walks in or something unexpected happens, say so for the recording and tell your teacher afterwards.
Privacy
Schools must explain what is recorded, how long it is kept and who can see it. Read the privacy notice or consent screen. If you have concerns or need an alternative, raise them before exam day.
If something goes wrong
Take a photo or screenshot of errors with the time visible, try to reconnect, and email your teacher immediately. Documented problems are usually handled fairly.

How does proctoring work on Canvas?
Canvas connects to proctoring tools such as Respondus Monitor or other services. They record your webcam, audio and sometimes your screen, and flag events for review.
Will I be flagged for looking away from the screen?
Proctoring software may flag looking away, but flags are reviewed by people. Normal behaviour like looking down to think is common and usually not a problem.
What if I don't have a webcam?
Contact your teacher early. Schools can usually provide a device, a testing room or an alternative arrangement.
