How the Moodle Quiz Timer Works (and What Happens When It Runs Out)
Does the Moodle timer stop if you close the page? What happens at zero? Here is exactly how Moodle quiz timers, grace periods and auto-submit work.
The Moodle quiz timer is simple until it is not. Students lose entire attempts because they assume the timer pauses, or because they did not realise their teacher chose a strict setting for what happens at zero. Here is exactly how it works.
The timer runs on the server
When you click "Attempt quiz now" on a timed quiz, Moodle records your start time on its server. The countdown you see in the navigation panel is just a display of that server-side clock. This means:
- Closing the tab does not pause the timer.
- Losing your internet does not pause the timer.
- Restarting your computer does not pause the timer.
When you come back, the timer shows the real time remaining.
The time limit can also be cut short by the closing date
If a quiz closes at 23:59 and you start at 23:40 with a 60-minute limit, you only get 19 minutes. Moodle uses whichever comes first: your time limit or the quiz close time. Start early enough to get your full time.
What happens when time runs out
Teachers choose one of three behaviours:
Open attempts are submitted automatically
When the timer hits zero, Moodle submits whatever answers were saved. This is the most forgiving option, but answers you were still typing may not be saved.
There is a grace period
When time runs out, you cannot change answers, but you have a short grace period to click submit. If you do not submit within the grace period, the attempt is not counted.
Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted
The strictest option. If you do not submit before zero, the attempt does not count at all.
The quiz page does not always say which one applies, so ask your teacher if you are unsure, and always submit with time to spare.
When are answers saved?
Moodle saves your answers when you navigate between pages and when you submit. Many sites also auto-save periodically during the attempt. To be safe, move to the next page or use the navigation panel regularly, especially on long essay questions.
Extra time and accommodations
Teachers can add user overrides that give specific students a longer time limit, a later closing date or extra attempts. If you have approved accommodations, check that the quiz page shows your extended time before starting.
Do not try to beat the timer
A timer checklist
- Know the time limit and the close time.
- Ask what happens at zero if it is not stated.
- Navigate between pages to save answers.
- Submit with at least one minute left.

Does the Moodle quiz timer stop if I close the browser?
No. The time limit is tracked by Moodle's server from the moment you start. Closing the browser or losing internet does not pause it.
Does Moodle submit my quiz automatically when time runs out?
Only if your teacher chose "Open attempts are submitted automatically". Other settings give a grace period to submit, or do not count the attempt if it was not submitted in time.
Can I get more time on a Moodle quiz?
Teachers can give extra time to individual students or groups with overrides, usually for approved accommodations. Ask your teacher or accessibility office before starting.
