Google Forms 'Sign In Required' and 'You Need Permission' Explained
Why does a Google Form ask you to sign in or say you need permission? Here is what each message means and how to fix it with the right account.
You click a quiz link and instead of questions you see "Sign in to continue" or "You need permission". Both have simple causes and simple fixes.
Why a form requires sign-in
A Google Form asks you to sign in when it uses any of these settings:
- Limit to 1 response: Google needs to know who you are to stop a second submission.
- Collect verified email addresses: your email is recorded with your response.
- File upload questions: files are saved to the form owner's Google Drive, which requires an account.
- Restrict to users in your organisation: only accounts from your school can respond.
"You need permission"
This message almost always means the form is restricted to your school's domain and you are signed in with a different account, such as a personal Gmail.
Fix:
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Choose or add your school account.
- Open the form link again.
If you are signed into several accounts, Chrome may open the form with the wrong one. A simple trick is to open the link in a new Chrome profile or a private window and sign in only with your school account.
"You've already responded"
The form allows only one response per account. If you submitted by mistake or need to change something, check whether you received an "Edit your response" link, or ask your teacher. See can you retake a Google Forms quiz?.
Using the wrong account by accident
If you submitted a quiz with the wrong account, your teacher may not see it under your name. Tell your teacher straight away, and they can either accept it or let you submit again.
On school Chromebooks
On managed Chromebooks, you are usually signed in with your school account already. If a quiz uses locked mode, it will only open on these devices.
Privacy
When sign-in is required, the teacher sees your email address with your response. Remember that before writing anything in a form you would not want linked to your name.
