Does Google Forms Have a Timer? How Timed Quizzes Work
Google Forms has no built-in timer, but teachers add one with add-ons or deadlines. Here is how timed Google Forms quizzes work and how to manage your time.
If your teacher says a Google Forms quiz is timed, you may be wondering where the timer is. Google Forms itself has no countdown. Here is how timed quizzes actually work and how to handle them.
Google Forms has no native timer
Out of the box, Google Forms does not limit how long you can spend on a form. Teachers create time limits in three common ways:
1. Third-party timer add-ons
Several add-ons wrap a Google Form in a timed page. You usually start on a page from the add-on, enter your name or sign in, and then see a countdown while you fill in the form. When time runs out, many of these tools submit automatically.
2. Closing the form at a set time
Teachers can switch off Accepting responses at a specific time, or use an add-on that does it automatically. Anything not submitted by then is lost.
3. Supervised time in class
In class, the teacher simply tells everyone when to submit, sometimes combined with locked mode on school Chromebooks.
What happens when time runs out
With add-ons, answers are often submitted automatically. With a closing time, the form stops accepting responses, and you may see "This form is no longer accepting responses". Unsaved answers are lost in that case, so do not wait until the last second.
Time management for Google Forms quizzes
- Check the number of questions and sections before you start. Scroll through quickly if allowed.
- Calculate your pace: time divided by number of questions, minus a small buffer.
- Answer what you know first, especially in long single-page forms.
- Do not get stuck: choose your best guess and move on.
- Submit early: aim to submit a minute or two before the deadline.
Practise under time pressure
Timed practice is the best preparation for timed quizzes. Make a practice form yourself (see create a practice quiz in Google Forms) or ask an AI for a set of questions, then answer them with a timer running. Check your answers afterwards. TrustStudy can help you check practice questions directly on the form.
Do not try to bend the timer

Does Google Forms have a built-in timer?
No. Google Forms does not include a native countdown timer. Teachers who want one use third-party add-ons or Chrome extensions, or simply close the form at a set time.
What happens when a Google Forms timer runs out?
It depends on the add-on. Many submit your answers automatically when time runs out, others stop accepting responses. Read the instructions on the start page.
Can a teacher close a Google Form at a specific time?
Yes. Teachers can turn off "Accepting responses" manually, or use add-ons that close the form automatically at a set time.
