Google Forms Question Types Explained (and How to Answer Each One)
Multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdowns, short answer, paragraph, grids, scales and more. How each Google Forms question type works and how to answer it well.
Each Google Forms question type has its own quirks, and some of them cost students points for reasons that have nothing to do with knowledge. Here is how each type works in a quiz and how to answer it well.
Multiple choice
One correct option, shown as round buttons. Auto-graded.
Tip: eliminate clearly wrong options first, then compare the remaining ones carefully. If an "Other" option exists, it is rarely the answer in a quiz.
Checkboxes
Several options can be correct, shown as square boxes. Auto-graded.
Tip: in Google Forms quizzes, a checkbox question is usually marked correct only if you select exactly the right set. Selecting one extra or missing one usually means zero for that question. Evaluate each option on its own, as a true/false statement.
Dropdown
Like multiple choice, but the options are hidden in a menu. Auto-graded.
Tip: open the menu and read every option before choosing. Long dropdowns hide good distractors at the bottom.
Short answer
You type a short response. Auto-graded by comparing it with the answers the teacher accepts.
Tip: spelling, extra words and format matter. Read Google Forms short answer tips.
Paragraph
A longer written answer. Not auto-graded, your teacher reads it.
Tip: answer the question directly in the first sentence, then support it. Teachers grading dozens of paragraphs appreciate clarity.
Multiple choice grid and checkbox grid
A table of rows and columns. Each row is like its own question. Can be auto-graded.
Tip: work row by row, and check that you did not skip a row. See Google Forms grid question tips.
Linear scale and rating
Pick a number on a scale or a number of stars. Mostly used in surveys, rarely graded.
Date and time
Pick a date or time. Occasionally used in history or scheduling questions.
File upload
Upload a file, such as a photo of handwritten work. Requires signing in. Graded manually.
Questions with images and videos
Any question can include an image, and options in multiple choice and checkboxes can be images. Look closely, because the image often contains the key information. See Google Forms math and image questions.
Practising each type
Practise the exact formats your teacher uses. Ask an AI to generate questions in those formats, or create your own practice quiz in Google Forms. To check practice questions quickly on the form, TrustStudy reads a question you highlight or double-click and shows the answer in the corner.
