Canvas Matching, Ordering and Categorisation Questions: How to Ace Them

Matching, ordering and categorisation questions test relationships. Learn how Canvas grades them, the usual traps and how to practise them with AI.

Matching, ordering and categorisation questions look straightforward, but they test whether you understand how ideas relate to each other. Here is how to approach each one in Canvas.

Matching

You pair items from a left column with options in dropdowns or a right column. There may be extra options that match nothing.

Strategies:

  1. Match the pairs you are sure about first.
  2. Watch for near-synonyms: terms that sound similar but mean different things.
  3. Use elimination for the last few.
  4. Read every option before choosing, especially in dropdowns.

Ordering (New Quizzes)

Drag items into the correct sequence: steps, events or stages.

Strategies:

  1. Find the clear first and last items.
  2. Ask what must happen before each step.
  3. Check every adjacent pair at the end.

Categorisation (New Quizzes)

Drag items into categories. Some items may be distractors that fit nowhere.

Strategies:

  1. Define each category in one sentence before sorting.
  2. Sort the obvious items first.
  3. For tricky items, compare them with each category's definition.

How to practise

These questions test relationships, so study relationships:

  • Comparison tables: put similar concepts side by side with their differences.
  • Sequences: rewrite processes from memory, step by step.
  • AI exercises: ask an AI for a matching set, a shuffled sequence or examples to categorise from your notes.

When working through practice quizzes, check your answers after committing to them. On New Quizzes, TrustStudy works best in Screenshot mode, which lets the AI see the full layout of the question.

Frequently asked questions

Do Canvas matching questions give partial credit?

Typically yes. Each correct pair earns part of the points, though exact scoring depends on the quiz engine and the teacher's settings.

How are ordering questions scored in Canvas New Quizzes?

Teachers choose the scoring method, which can be all-or-nothing or partial credit. Aim for the fully correct sequence.

How should I study for categorisation questions?

Learn the defining features of each category, then practise sorting new examples. AI can generate examples to sort.
