Google Forms Auto-Grading Explained: How Your Quiz Is Scored

How does Google Forms grade a quiz? Answer keys, points, checkbox rules, short answer matching, manual grading and regrades, explained for students.

Knowing how Google Forms scores a quiz helps you avoid losing points on technicalities and understand your results. Here is how it works.

The answer key

When a teacher turns on quiz mode, each question can have:

  • Correct answer(s): one or more options or accepted text answers.
  • Points: how many points the question is worth.
  • Feedback: messages for correct and incorrect answers.

When you submit, Google compares your answers with the key and totals your points automatically.

Which questions are auto-graded

  • Multiple choice and dropdown: one correct option.
  • Checkboxes: a set of correct options.
  • Short answer: one or more accepted answers.
  • Multiple choice grid and checkbox grid: a correct answer per row.

Paragraph and file upload answers are graded by your teacher.

How checkboxes are scored

For checkbox questions, the auto-grader generally gives the points only if you select exactly the correct set. Missing one correct option or selecting a wrong one usually gives zero for that question. Teachers can adjust scores manually.

How short answers are scored

Short answers are compared with the list of accepted answers. If your answer does not match any of them, it is marked wrong, even if a human would accept it. Common causes: spelling variations, plurals, extra words, units, or a different number format. See Google Forms short answer tips.

Manual grading and regrades

Teachers can open responses and:

  • Award points for paragraph and file upload answers.
  • Give credit for short answers the auto-grader missed.
  • Fix a wrong answer key, which recalculates scores.
  • Add individual feedback.

This is why scores released "later, after manual review" can differ from what you expected.

Grids

Each row in a grid is graded like its own question. Some teachers give points per row, others for the whole grid. See Google Forms grid question tips.

What to do if you think a grade is wrong

  1. Check the correct answer and feedback, if released.
  2. If you believe your answer should count, write to your teacher politely with the question number and your reasoning.
  3. Keep it short and specific.

Teachers fix genuine grading errors all the time.

Frequently asked questions

How does Google Forms grade quizzes automatically?

The teacher sets an answer key and points for each question. When you submit, Google compares your answers with the key and adds up the points for questions you got right.

Why was my correct short answer marked wrong?

Short answers are matched against the accepted answers the teacher entered. A different spelling, extra words or a different format can be marked wrong. Teachers can fix it manually.

Can a teacher change my Google Forms quiz grade?

Yes. Teachers can grade questions manually, give partial points, and correct the answer key, which updates scores.
