Math and Image Questions in Google Forms: How to Handle Them

Google Forms has no equation editor, so math and diagram questions often come as images. How to read them, answer in the right format and practise with AI.

Maths, physics, chemistry and biology quizzes on Google Forms often include equations, graphs and diagrams. Because Google Forms has no equation editor, these questions behave a bit differently. Here is how to deal with them.

How teachers add math to Forms

Teachers typically use one of these approaches:

  • Images: the equation or diagram is an image above the question or as an answer option.
  • Plain text: equations written with symbols like x^2 or 3/4.
  • Add-ons: tools that convert equations into images inside the form.

Read images carefully

Images can be small, especially on phones. Click or zoom to see details like exponents, subscripts, axis labels and units. Many mistakes on image questions come from misreading, not from not knowing.

Typing math answers

For short answer math questions, format matters because answers are matched exactly. See Google Forms short answer tips. Common conventions:

  • Powers: x^2
  • Fractions: 3/4
  • Square roots: sqrt(2)
  • Decimals: follow the instructions on rounding.

If the question asks for "number only", do not include units or variables.

Answering diagram questions

For labelled diagrams, graphs or circuits:

  1. Identify what the diagram shows before reading the options.
  2. Read the axes, labels and units.
  3. Eliminate options that contradict any detail in the image.

Practising with AI

Text-only AI tools cannot see images in a form, so they guess or ask you to describe the picture. For practice questions with images, use a tool that captures the screen. In TrustStudy, switch the input to Screenshot and press Alt + X: the AI sees the diagram and the question together and shows the answer in the corner. It costs a little more per question than text, so keep it for questions that need it.

AI can still misread crowded images or handwriting. If the answer looks wrong, zoom in and try again, or work it out step by step yourself.

Building your own practice

Ask an AI to generate practice problems with full solutions, then solve them on paper before checking. For visual topics, draw the diagrams yourself from memory. You can also put problems into your own form. See create your own practice quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Forms show math equations?

Google Forms has no built-in equation editor. Teachers usually insert equations as images or use add-ons, and some write them in plain text.

How do I type math answers in Google Forms?

Use the format your teacher asks for. Common conventions are ^ for powers, / for fractions and sqrt() for square roots. When in doubt, ask or follow class examples.

Can AI read image questions in Google Forms?

Only if it can see the image. A screenshot-based tool lets the AI read diagrams and equations that text-only tools cannot see.
