Canvas Quiz Time Management: Finish Every Quiz on Time

Pace yourself on timed Canvas quizzes, handle one-question-at-a-time and locked questions, and use practice to get faster without sacrificing accuracy.

Running out of time on a Canvas quiz is frustrating, especially when you knew the material. Time management is a skill, and these strategies make it automatic.

Before you start

Read the quiz details:

  • Time limit and availability end time (whichever is earlier wins). See the Canvas quiz timer explained.
  • Number of questions.
  • One question at a time and lock questions after answering: if both are on, you cannot go back.
  • Attempts allowed.

Calculate your pace

Divide the time by the number of questions and subtract about 15% for review. For 30 minutes and 20 questions, that is about 75 seconds per question. Check the timer every five questions.

Strategies when you can go back

  1. Answer easy questions quickly.
  2. For hard ones, choose your best guess and flag the question.
  3. Return to flagged questions at the end with the time you saved.

Use the question list to spot unanswered or flagged questions before submitting.

Strategies when questions are locked

With locked questions, there is no going back. For each question:

  1. Read it fully.
  2. Eliminate wrong options.
  3. Decide within your time budget.
  4. Move on without second-guessing.

Watch out for time sinks

  • Stimulus questions with long passages: read the questions first.
  • Formula and numerical questions: write working on paper to avoid redoing it.
  • Essay questions: plan in bullet points and set a time limit for each.

Practise at quiz speed

Frequently asked questions

How do I manage time on a Canvas quiz?

Divide the time limit by the number of questions, keep a review buffer, answer easy questions quickly and avoid getting stuck on any single question.

Can I go back to questions on a Canvas quiz?

Usually yes, unless the teacher enabled "Lock questions after answering", which shows one question at a time and prevents going back.

Should I guess on Canvas quizzes?

Usually yes. Unanswered questions score zero. Be more careful on multiple answers questions, where wrong selections may lose points.
