Can Moodle See If You Switch Tabs? Logs, Plugins and Privacy

Can Moodle tell when you open another tab during a quiz? Here is what standard Moodle records, what proctoring and Safe Exam Browser add, and what teachers see.

"Can Moodle see if I switch tabs?" is one of the most searched questions about online quizzes. The honest answer has several parts, because it depends on what your school added to Moodle.

Standard Moodle: no tab tracking

A standard Moodle site does not record when you switch to another browser tab or application. Moodle sees what happens on Moodle: the pages you load, the answers you save, the times of each action and your IP address. It cannot see other websites you visit.

But Moodle records a lot about the quiz itself

Even without tab tracking, a quiz attempt leaves a detailed record:

  • Start and finish time, and total duration.
  • The response history for each question, with timestamps of every save or change.
  • Course log entries for every page you opened during the attempt, such as course files.
  • The IP address of each action.

If you open a course PDF in Moodle during a closed-book quiz, that is in the logs, because it happened on Moodle. See 5 Moodle features teachers use to spot cheating.

Plugins and proctoring can see more

Many schools add tools on top of standard Moodle:

  • Proctoring plugins and services can record your screen, webcam and browser activity, including leaving the exam window. Read what Moodle proctoring monitors.
  • Quiz access plugins can add extra checks during an attempt.
  • Browser security settings open the quiz in a full-screen pop-up.
  • Safe Exam Browser stops you from switching to other apps or tabs at all.

You usually know when these are in place, because they require consent, installation or special launch steps.

Other platforms are different

Canvas Classic Quizzes, for example, include a quiz log that can show when a student stopped viewing the quiz page. Google Forms has a locked mode on managed Chromebooks. See can Canvas see if you switch tabs? and can teachers see if you switch tabs on Google Forms?.

The question behind the question

Usually, students ask this because they want to know if they can look something up during a quiz. So here is the important part.

When looking things up is fine

Some quizzes are open book or explicitly allow outside resources and AI. In that case, switching tabs is part of the task. Read the instructions, and if they are unclear, ask. For studying outside of graded quizzes, tools like TrustStudy let you check practice questions on the same page without switching at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can Moodle detect tab switching?

Standard Moodle does not record switching to another browser tab. However, proctoring plugins and some quiz add-ons can, and Safe Exam Browser prevents it entirely.

Can Moodle see other websites I visit?

No. Moodle only sees activity on the Moodle site itself: pages you open, actions you take and the IP address used.

Can my teacher still tell if I looked something up?

Possibly. Timing, response history, answer patterns and follow-up questions can all reveal it, even if tab switching itself is not recorded.
