Can Teachers See If You Switch Tabs on Google Forms?
Does Google Forms tell your teacher when you leave the quiz tab? Here is what a normal form records, how locked mode works and what teachers can still notice.
It is one of the most searched questions about Google Forms quizzes. The answer depends on how the quiz is set up and what device you use.
A normal Google Form: no tab tracking
A standard Google Forms quiz does not record when you switch to another tab or window. When you submit, the form stores:
- Your answers.
- The timestamp of the submission.
- Your email address, if the form collects emails or requires sign-in.
It does not store the time you started, how long each question took or what else you did in your browser.
Locked mode changes everything
Schools using Google Workspace for Education can enable locked mode for quizzes taken on school-managed Chromebooks. In locked mode:
- The quiz opens full screen.
- You cannot open other tabs, websites or apps.
- Extensions and screenshots are blocked.
On other devices, such as personal laptops, locked mode does not apply. Read Google Forms locked mode explained.
Other software on school devices
Some schools install monitoring tools on school Chromebooks or laptops, separate from Google Forms. These can show teachers the active tab or screen in real time during class. They have nothing to do with the form itself, so a form "not tracking tabs" does not mean nobody can see.
What teachers can still notice
Even without tracking, teachers see patterns:
- Submission times that are much faster than the rest of the class.
- Identical unusual wrong answers between students.
- Answers worded exactly like a website or an AI.
- Scores that do not match your usual work or in-class performance.

Why students ask, and the honest answer
When switching tabs is fine
Open-book quizzes, homework forms and practice quizzes often allow notes or resources. Read the instructions at the top of the form, and ask if unsure. For practice forms, you do not even need to switch tabs: TrustStudy shows the answer on the same page when you highlight a question and press Alt + X.
Compare with other platforms
Canvas Classic Quizzes can log when you leave the quiz page, while standard Moodle cannot. See can Canvas see if you switch tabs? and can Moodle see other tabs?.

A normal Google Form does not record when you switch tabs. Locked mode, available on school-managed Chromebooks, prevents switching tabs during the quiz instead.
What does Google Forms record about my response?
Your answers, the submission time and, if the form collects it, your email address. It does not record how long you spent on each question.
Can a Chrome extension tell my teacher I switched tabs?
Some schools use separate monitoring or proctoring software on school devices. Those tools are independent of Google Forms and can track browser activity.
