Can Inspect Element Reveal Moodle Quiz Answers? (No, Here's Why)

Many videos claim Inspect Element reveals Moodle quiz answers. It does not. Here is how Moodle grades answers on the server, and what actually helps you learn.

Search for Moodle quiz tricks and you will find videos promising that Inspect Element reveals the answers. It is one of the most persistent myths among students. Here is why it does not work on Moodle, and what that tells you about how the platform works.

What Inspect Element actually does

Inspect Element (or Developer Tools) shows the HTML, CSS and JavaScript your browser received from a website. You can also edit it, but those edits only change your local copy of the page. Nothing you change is sent back to the server unless the page itself sends it.

How Moodle grades a quiz

When you take a Moodle quiz, your browser receives the question text and the possible choices. It does not receive which choice is correct. When you move to the next page or submit, your answers are sent to Moodle's server, and the server compares them with the answer key stored in its database. The grade is calculated there.

Because the answer key stays on the server, there is nothing in the page code to find. Changing a choice's label to "correct" in Inspect Element only changes what you see.

Why the videos seem to work

When a video shows Inspect Element revealing answers, it is usually one of these:

  • A different, poorly built quiz tool that sends the answer key to the browser.
  • Someone editing the page to look like a perfect score, for a screenshot.
  • A review page where the teacher already enabled showing correct answers.

None of these apply to a properly configured Moodle quiz.

What about the review page?

After submitting, the review page may show correct answers, depending on your teacher's review options. That is not a trick, it is a feature. Our guide to Moodle quiz review explains how to use it well.

The risks of trying

What actually helps

If you want answers so you can understand the material, there are legitimate ways:

  • The quiz review page and feedback.
  • Your teacher and the course forum.
  • AI tools for practice and self-study. TrustStudy reads a highlighted question and shows the answer on the page, which is useful for checking practice quizzes.

The takeaway

Inspect Element is a great tool for learning how websites work. It is not a way to get Moodle answers. Spend that time on practice questions instead, and the next quiz will not need any tricks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see Moodle quiz answers with Inspect Element?

No. Moodle grades your answers on its server after you submit. The correct answers are not sent to your browser during the attempt, so they are not in the page code.

Why do videos show Inspect Element working on quizzes?

Usually they use a different quiz tool, edit what the page displays locally, or show a quiz that already revealed its answers. Editing the page only changes what you see, not your grade.

Can teachers see if I use Inspect Element?

Moodle does not record Inspect Element itself, but changing page data can create odd requests or errors in logs, and trying to tamper with a quiz breaks most school rules.
