Why Is My Moodle Quiz Locked? Restrictions Explained

Moodle quiz greyed out, not available or asking for something? Here are the access restrictions that lock quizzes and exactly what to do about each one.

You open your course, find the quiz, and it is greyed out with a message like "Not available unless...". Or it opens but will not let you start. Moodle has several kinds of restrictions, and each has a simple fix once you know what you are looking at.

Access restrictions on the activity

Teachers can add access restrictions to any Moodle activity, including quizzes. The quiz then stays locked until you meet the conditions. Common ones are:

  • Date: available from or until a specific date and time.
  • Grade: you need a certain grade in another activity, such as passing a practice quiz.
  • Activity completion: you must complete another activity first, such as reading a page or watching a video.
  • User profile or group: only some students or groups can access it.

Moodle shows the condition below the quiz name. Read it carefully, because it often includes a link to the activity you need to finish.

Quiz timing restrictions

Even when the activity is visible, the quiz itself can be closed. Check the quiz page for:

  • "This quiz will open on..." means it has not started yet.
  • "This quiz closed on..." means the deadline passed.
  • A time limit warning tells you the countdown starts as soon as you begin.

Attempt limits and delays

If you used all your attempts, Moodle shows "No more attempts are allowed". If there is an enforced delay, it tells you when you can try again. Learn how grading works across attempts in Moodle quiz attempts and grading explained.

Password, network and browser requirements

Some quizzes need a password, a specific network or Safe Exam Browser. These are covered in our guide to Moodle quiz security features. The short version: get the password from your teacher, connect to the right network, or install Safe Exam Browser in advance.

When the restriction is a mistake

Teachers set restrictions by hand, and mistakes happen. A date might be in the wrong time zone, or a grade condition might point to the wrong activity. If you meet the condition and the quiz is still locked:

  1. Refresh the page and log out and back in.
  2. Check that the activity you completed shows as complete in the course index.
  3. Take a screenshot of the message and the time.
  4. Message your teacher through Moodle before the deadline.

A screenshot with a timestamp is the best proof that the problem was not your fault.

Accommodations and overrides

If you have approved accommodations, such as extra time, teachers can add user overrides to a quiz. These change the dates, time limit or number of attempts just for you. If your extra time does not appear on the quiz page, contact your teacher or accessibility office before starting, because Moodle applies the time limit as soon as you begin.

Do not look for shortcuts

Prevent lockouts before they happen

  • Check the timeline block every week for upcoming quizzes.
  • Complete prerequisite activities early, not on the deadline day.
  • Read the quiz description as soon as it appears.

A locked quiz is usually just a message telling you what to do next. Follow it, and if it does not make sense, ask. For pacing your study around quiz dates, see our Moodle quiz time management guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Moodle quiz say "Not available unless"?

The quiz has an access restriction. Moodle shows the condition under the quiz name, for example a date, a grade in another activity or completing a previous activity.

How do I unlock a restricted Moodle quiz?

Meet the condition shown under the quiz, such as viewing a resource or passing an earlier quiz. If the condition looks wrong or impossible, message your teacher.

Can a teacher give me extra time or an extra attempt?

Yes. Teachers can create user or group overrides that change dates, time limits and attempts for specific students, for example for accommodations.
