Moodle's AI Features: A Student's Guide for 2026
Moodle now has built-in AI features like course summaries and explanations. Here is what they do, when you can use them and how they help you study.
For years, Moodle was the platform you used to download slides and submit assignments. Recent versions have started to add AI directly into the platform. If you have noticed new buttons like "Summarise" or "Explain" in your courses, this guide explains what they are and how to use them well.
Where the AI in Moodle comes from
Moodle 4.5 introduced an AI subsystem. In simple terms, it is a connection between Moodle and an AI provider chosen by your school. On top of that connection, Moodle offers placements, which are the places where AI appears for users. The two placements students meet most often are:
- Course assistance: tools that can summarise or explain the text of a course page, for example a long reading or a page of notes.
- Text editor assistance: tools inside the editor that can help generate text or images, mostly used by teachers when creating content.
Because every school picks its own provider and switches placements on or off, two students at different universities can see completely different AI options in Moodle.
How to use "Summarise" and "Explain" for studying
These tools are most useful when a course page is long or written in dense academic language.
- Use Summarise on a long reading to see the main ideas before you read it properly. Knowing where the text is going makes it easier to follow.
- Use Explain when a passage does not make sense. Ask yourself what you did not understand before clicking, so you can check if the explanation actually answered it.
- After reading, close the summary and try to write your own three-sentence version. If you cannot, you have not learned it yet.
What Moodle's AI does not do
Moodle's built-in AI is designed for teaching and learning support. It does not answer quiz questions for you, and it is not a general chatbot. It also only works with the text it is given, so it cannot see the slides in a PDF or the diagram in an image unless your school's setup supports it.
That is why many students combine Moodle's own tools with a browser extension. For example, TrustStudy can read a question you highlight, the visible page text, or a screenshot of the page, which helps with diagrams and images.
Privacy: what happens to your text
When you use a Moodle AI feature, the selected text is sent to the AI provider your school configured. Schools usually publish a privacy notice that explains this, and Moodle includes a policy that users may need to accept before using AI features. If you are unsure, check your school's Moodle help page.
Using AI features the right way
The safest approach is to treat AI features as a tutor that is available outside of graded work. Use them while reading and revising, then close them when it is time to prove what you know. Our guide on using AI on Moodle without cheating goes into more detail.
What to expect next
Moodle releases new versions twice a year, and AI support keeps growing. Expect more placements, more providers and more control for teachers over where AI can be used. For students, the takeaway is simple: learn to use these tools for understanding, because that skill will matter far more than any one feature. Does Moodle have built-in AI?
Yes. Since Moodle 4.5, Moodle has an AI subsystem that sites can connect to an AI provider. It powers features like summarising or explaining course content, but your school decides whether it is switched on.
Why can't I see the AI features in my Moodle?
AI features only appear if your school's administrators have enabled an AI provider and the relevant placements. Many schools are still testing them, so they may not be available yet.
Can I use Moodle's AI during a quiz?
That depends on how your school configured it and on your teacher's rules. Always assume a graded quiz is AI-free unless your teacher says otherwise.
